Email-Newsletter - Summer 2008

Summer's finally here and things are really "heating up" at the NY Irish Center! Please join us for one of the many fun events we've got planned this summer. And if you have any suggestions for events or activities to help keep everyone "cool" during the summer, or if you have any great ideas for Autumn, please drop us a line to info@newyorkirishcenter.org

We'll start by giving you a brief recap of events since our last newsletter, and then will "dive in" to the upcoming activities so you can plan ahead - enjoy!

Past Events @ the Center

Play Events:
Juno & the Paycock, written by Sean O’Casey; The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde; Living Quarters, written by Brian Friel.
These “Play Events” come under the heading of Culture, Cuisine & Craic, and are our fundraisers. We start the night with a Champagne Cocktail hour, leading into the first half of the play, then we have a Hot Buffet Dinner with Beverages, followed by the second half of the play and a raffle. The whole evening is centered around a social setting with entertainment and people getting to know each other.
We also hosted Kid Shamrock, written by Robert Cassidy, which was a fundraiser to aid the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform movement.
Our next play is coming from Galway, Ireland, and promises to be a very funny play. There will be some local actors in the cast and will be staged at the end of September for one week only. Please stay tuned for that event, which will be followed by reading from the works of John B. Keane in mid October.

Dinner Dance:
We had our 3rd Annual Dinner Dance, at Antun’s, in April, at which we celebrated our honorees Sean Mackin and James P. Mahoney. The night was our biggest and most successful to date with guests attending from far and wide. Our entertainment for the night was provided by Summer Wind, who are did a fabulous job. We would like to extend a warm and hearty ‘thank you’ to our helpers and volunteers who did an awesome job of accommodating the large numbers of people who showed up on the night. We couldn’t have done it without you!! A special thank you also to Sean and James for their wonderful support, and to your friends who came out to honor you with us.

Upcoming Events @ the Center

“Blind Date” Night:
We have a wonderful event coming up on July 12th @ 7pm, which promises to be lots of fun for all! Our ‘Blind Date Night’ was dreamed up due to receiving calls from people asking how they can meet other people. One of these call prompted this event, which continues to grow… The night will start with some beverages and munchies, and a little instruction from renowned Matchmaker, Maureen Nelson on how to get from the point of meeting or seeing someone to an actual date! So hard for lots of us!!
Then we start our Blind Date event. Just like the TV shows! One lady asking 3 guys questions, and 1 guy asking 3 ladies questions all to determine who would offer the most compatibility for a date. These (we’ll call them contestants), will be ‘nominated’ by local establishments best known to represent them, and so we won’t know exactly who they are on the night- hence the Blind Date theme.
We have set up Dates for the people who choose each other. There’s a Hudson River Brunch Cruise, tickets to the Repertory Theater (Around the World in 80 Days is playing now), tickets to the concert The Young Dubliners playing at BB Kings, dinners for 2, Horse & Carriage Ride, Movie Night, Interactive Comedy Night, a trip to Gaelic Park and others….. Supporters are encouraged! Contestants are eagerly welcomed!! The $25 for non-contestants is for drinks and munchies. The Band “The Cute Hoors”, will be playing throughout the night.

Celtic Summer Camp 2008:
The Center is hosting a fun-filled camp for Elementary School Children (Grades 2 – 8) including music, drama, art & crafts, puzzles, and other fun activities provided by a qualified school teacher & qualified drama counselor.
Camp # 1: Monday, July 21st - Friday 25th
Camp # 2: Monday, July 28th - August 1st
For further information, contact Camp Director Martin @ 646-784-9228 or New York Irish Center @ 718-482-0909. Registration is required!!!

On-Going Events @ the Center

Care-giver & Toddler Group:

This group meets every Monday from 2pm to 5pm, and every Thursday from 10:30am to 2pm. We provide a large space for your child to run around and play with toys. A nice reprieve from the cold of the nearest park! In the Fall, our Creative Coordinator will be joining sometimes to get the toddlers busy with some music and creative activity. Come for mutual support and fun for the children.

Senior Lunch and Social Club:

We provide a weekly social life for our senior group every Wednesday from 1pm to 4’ish! While meeting old friends, playing cards, chatting and making new friends, and generally feeling welcome, we provide a free lunch to all who attend. Starting in July, and prior to the lunch, at 11:45am, we will have a Chair Yoga class for 1 hour so get your exercise for the day! If you are the computer geek type, you can while away the afternoon catching up on e-mails and corresponding with relatives miles away, or enjoy your ‘soaps’ on TV in our café area. And also in July we are starting a Painting class and maybe some arts and crafts with one of our local senior artists. We plan on starting a ‘book club’ shortly where you can also enjoy our eclectic library.

Please Support the New York Irish Center
The Center is kept running by people who come out and support our events and activities. We are very fortunate to have individuals and businesses that will not only support us themselves but have helped to spread the word about what we do here for the community. We also have to thank the many people that help run our activities by donating so much of their free time to the events here at the Center. It would be impossible to do everything we need to without their readiness to give up an afternoon or evening to help us.

If you would like to support the programs and services that the Center provides to the Irish community, please visit our online donation page at http://www.newyorkirishcenter.org/donate.htm. Or send us an email to info@newyorkirishcenter.org if you would like to donate your time and talent to keeping the Center growing. Go raibh míle maith agat!
