irish language class - Spring 2024

New York Irish Center happily presents our Irish Language teacher Caoimhe Nic Giollarnáith and her new winter classes.

  • 6 - Week Course

  • $150

  • April 18th - May 23rd (weekly, Thursdays)

Two classes are available:

  • Introduction to Irish (in-person) 6pm - 7pm

  • Advanced Beginners (online) 7:30pm - 8:30pm

(For anyone who has taken the introductory course / has done another course somewhere else / learned the basics in school).

About our Teacher

Caoimhe Nic Giollarnáith is originally from County Kildare. She attended Irish language medium schools and graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway, with first class honors BA and MA degrees in Modern Irish. She has over 10 years of teaching experience as an Adjunct Professor and recently earned the Certificate in teaching Irish to adults from Maynooth University. Caoimhe currently teaches Irish language and literature undergraduate courses at Lehman College, CUNY and private classes. In the past, she has taught Irish language courses at Fordham University, Manhattan College and Rosetta Stone. In February 2020, she received a Top 40 Under 40 award from The Irish Echo. Caoimhe is a regular guest on Irish language radio shows on BBC, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and featured in the IFTA award nominated documentary series GAA USA broadcast on TG4.


Fiddle Class with Niall Mulligan

Niall Mulligan is a former All-Ireland medalist currently teaching traditional Irish fiddle. In his tenure as instructor at NYIC, he’s already produced qualifiers for the prestigious annual All-Ireland Fleadh. He offers lessons for all skill levels, including those who simply want to enjoy a tune: jig, reel, polka, you name it.

Tin Whistle Lessons with Jade Keogh

In-person tin whistle workshop with brilliant teacher and musician Jade Keogh. All ages and experience are welcome! Beginner, intermediate and advanced classes will be available. Classes last 1 hour - $25 per class.

violin lessons with gregory harrington

Gregory Harrington international concert violinist and pedagogue, who has performed all over the world as soloist with many orchestras and presented masterclasses in conservatories and universities around the globe. The goal of these lessons is to create a enjoyable environment to creatively challenge each student so that they can reach their potential and enjoy the process. Classes range from the simplicity of developing a proper setup to the more advanced levels.

Bodhrán classes

Colin Harte, NYCDOE instructor of precussion (West African percussion ensemble) and Irish music instructor for CUNY, is bringing his talents to NYIC to offer an eight-week course in playing the Bodhrán. Colin has extensive experience teaching online, given his background in teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The eight-week course is $165.


world percussion classes

This live instruction, online class will be looking at different percussion traditions from around the globe. Students will learn to play assorted percussion traditions. Students will be able to perform rhythms from musical traditions from Brazil, The Caribbean, West Africa and South America, amongst others. This class is intended for beginner and intermediate students. The class will be meeting via zoom to play and discuss music. Students should have a percussion instrument (preferably a drum) for class.


irish piano classes-melody & accompaniment

This course introduces piano students to performing Irish traditional melodies on the piano and how to accompany (vamp) Irish traditional music. This live instruction online class is intended for students who already play the piano but are new to playing Irish traditional music (beginner-intermediate). The class will be meeting via zoom to play and discuss music. Students will need to have a keyboard for class.
