Kicking off the Festival, Ireland’s mega-popular comedian and media figure (and Flushing native) Des Bishop brings us his new comedy show about the loss of his much-adored mom. This is the US-premiere engagement of “Mia Mamma,” which was beginning a national tour in Ireland in early 2020 before it had to stop in March. Eileen Bishop, who died in March 2019, raised Des in Flushing, Queens, until she sent him to boarding school in Ireland. Des, who survived this decision, is known for shedding humorous light on life as it’s happening around him. He once memorably taught himself Mandarin so he could perform comedy in Chinese. His eight-month Chinese immersion in Beijing, where he opened a comedy club, was chronicled on RTE. Now he returns to his native New York and to Origin 1st Irish (where he performed a run of shows back 2015), to tell a captivating and real story of family loyalty, and of living through, overcoming, and learning from huge mistakes.
