The All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI), the Ireland America Science Forum, University College Dublin Alumni, Queen's University Belfast Alumni, and the Consulate General of Ireland, New York invite you to join a special evening of networking and discussion about the exciting vision for an overarching framework for cancer research across the island of Ireland and the immense potential offered by growing existing collaborative links with the United States.
The developing AICRI initiative builds on the success of the All-Ireland Cancer Consortium (AICC), a tripartite partnership between the Governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland and the US National Cancer Institute (NCI). AICC, the brainchild of the late Professor Paddy Johnston of Queen’s University Belfast (who had previously worked at the NCI in Washington) was established in 1999, as one of the many dividends of the Good Friday Agreement, which marks its 25th Anniversary in April this year.
Amongst its major achievements included the training of nearly 500 doctors, nurses, and scientists from the island of Ireland (at the NCI from 2000-2020) who returned to bolster cancer research and cancer care on the island of Ireland. A Memorandum of Understanding was re-signed by the three parties in March 2021 and was specifically referenced by President Biden in his 2021 St. Patrick’s Day conversation with former Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
With the AICC as a key strength, AICRI’s vision of an overarching framework, from discovery to implementation, will help drive the delivery of transformative cancer care for all citizens on the island of Ireland.
