Between the Lines: Little Island Books

New York Irish Center presents a very special evening of celebration around US-launch of three new Irish children’s books: The Fox’s Tower by Sam Thompson, The Girl who Fell to Earth by Patricia Forde, and Savage Her Reply by Deirdre Sullivan. Join us for a beautiful night of readings and discussion of Irish children’s publishing.

All three authors are publishing new books in the US this fall

Patricia Forde is from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. She has published several picture books in Irish and in English, and three novels for children with Little Island. The List was published by SourceBooks in the US, and Bumpfizzle the Best on Planet Earth was published in the US by Little Island in 2022 to strong critical acclaim. She has won two White Raven awards and has twice been shortlisted for the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year. She is the Laureate na nÓg (Ireland's Children's Literature Laureate) 2023 - 2026. Patricia is married to Padraic and has two grown up children. She still lives in Galway, Ireland, the best city in the world. Her latest book The Girl who Fell to Earth publishes in the US on October 3rd.

Sam Thompson is the author of two novels for children, Wolfstongue and The Fox’s Tower, and several books for grown-ups. He lives in Belfast with his wife, three children, a dog who looks like an old towel, and a cat who is best friends with the dog but won’t admit it. Wolfstongue was published in the US in hardback in 2022, and The Fox’s Tower was published in the US in August 2023, and the paperback edition of Wolfstongue publishes in the US on September 5th 2023.

Deirdre Sullivan is an award-winning writer from Galway. Her reimagining of the Children of Lir, Savage Her Reply (Little Island Books, publishing in the US in 2023) won the Young Adult Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards, the Children’s Book Ireland Awards Book of the Year Award, and the Biennial Literacy Association of Ireland Young Adult Book Award. Her collection of dark and witchy fairytale retellings, Tangleweed and Brine (Little Island Books), won Book of the Year at the 2018 Children’s Books Ireland awards and Young Adult Book of the Year at the 2017 Irish Book Awards. In 2022 she published Weave, a collection of stories written together with Oein DeBhairduin and published by Skein Press.

Little Island Books are an independent children’s book publisher, based in Dublin, Ireland. They recently began publishing in the US and Canada, and are thrilled to be able to bring their Publisher, Matthew Parkinson-Bennett, along with authors Patricia Forde, Deirdre Sullivan, and Sam Thompson, on a visit to New York to connect with readers and lovers of Irish literature there.
