Crossroads Concerts: Irish & Puerto Rican Mummers Fusion

Mark the beginning of the holiday season with the Puerto Rican annual tradition of mumming in harmony with traditional Irish music. The Kerry-born folk and folk-rock favorite Mary Courtney (leads the band Morning Star and has performed with Black 47) is joined by a few of the most talented Puerto Rican musicians in New York to give this tradition new life.
Mary Courtney (voice, guitar, bodhrán), Dylan James (fiddle, banjo and dance) and Colin Harte (voice/piano/bodhrán).  Voice/pandeiretas: Carlos Espada (vocals/guacharo), Jorge Vazquez (punteador/coro), Mateo Gonzalez (requinto/coro), Victor Pablo (seguidor/coro), and Raul Rios (trumpet/coro).

Tonight we explore the liminal spaces between the Irish Wren Boy winter holiday tradition and the Puerto Rican parranda Christmas processional tradition. The traditions share certain celebratory practices such as parading from different neighbors' homes, playing music in exchange for food, drink, and amusement.
